When I used to browse my Marks and Spencer hard back title 'Wonders of the World', I thought it was all so easy - there were seven natural wonders and seven man-made wonders and that was that. But that was only scratching the surface as numerous lists emerged with categories ranging from 'ancient' to 'modern' and 'underwater' to 'forgotten'. The Seven Wonders of the World are subject to continuous scrutiny and given the wealth of amazing sites across the globe, this is not surprising.
In the search for the New Seven Wonders of the World, New's Zealand's spectacular Milford Sound is one of 28 finalists as compiled by the website www.new7wonders.com based on votes collated from around the world.
Once dubbed by Rudyard Kipling as the 'eighth wonder of the world', Milford Sound is much heralded and was also judged the top travel destination by TripAdvisor's 2008 Travelers' Choice Destination Award. Little wonder for those who have visited.
The glorious site of Mitre Peak rising high above the deep fiords of Milford Sound is a feature of one of New Zealand's most popular experiences - a cruise on the ribbon-like fiords of the Sound. Whether on a day cruise or an overnight adventure, Milford offers an experience to savour. Waterfalls cascade down the sheer rock faces, while lush rainforests blanket the peaks and valleys. The deep still waters play host to seals, dolphins and penguins, that quite simply provide the sort of encounters you'll treasure forever.
Whatever the result of the final selection, there is no doubt that Milford is one of New Zealand's treasures and well worth a visit.

Visiting Milford Sound soon, I'm a Kiwi but have never been, can't wait. We'll be doing some kayaking and hiking there. That photo is incredible!
