2009 has already begun in New Zealand, but here in the UK, there's still time for me to get one more post in under the 2008 banner. It's appropriate that I do so since it relates to the 20 year anniversary of that eponymous kiwi pastime - bungy jumping!
Beyond it's famous food exports and a passion for rugby, one of the first things I ever fully associated with New Zealand was bungy jumping. The frankly ridiculous pursuit of hurling oneself off a lofty platform with nothing more than a giant elastic band lashed to one's ankles is 20 years old this year, suggesting that it is anything other than a passing fad.
From the original 43m jump off Kawarau Bridge outside of Queenstown, AJ Hackett Bungy has become a global phenomonen and the jumps more and more extreme. In Queenstown alone intrepid (well that's one word for it) participants can choose from six 'experiences' including the ultimate 143m Nevis Bungy! Well, with 8.5 seconds of freefall, there's plenty of time to admire the glorious scenery.
Have a great New Year!
