In the 'What's On vein' of blogging, the farming heartland of Waikato will be hosting the 38th Rally New Zealand from 30 August to 2 September. Round 11 of the FIA World Rally Championship as well as teams like Subaru, Ford and Citroen, Brit Alister McRae (brother of former world champion Colin) has entered.
This is the biggest such event in the southern hemisphere and the 2007 entry is proving to be the most international field yet, attracting 68 entrants from 24 countries and could be worth a night in Hamilton to see. This town, which is NZ's fourth largest city, is not really renowened for it's tourism, but it has plenty of themed gardens, (not necessarily the most obvious companion to rally driving), and is near to the glow worm caves of Waitomo.
And if this inspires you to try tackle a bit of grunt driving head down the road to Rotorua and try the Self Drive 4WD Bush Safari. A 1-hour adventure through a purpose built extreme off-road trail. Fun!!
